Amen, EAT!!!

Before every meal, we say grace and thank God for the food we are about to eat. There’s a song the boys sing before every meal. They learned it at daycare.

It says:
God our Father, God our Father
Once again, Once again
We are here to thank you, We are here to thank you
Amen, Amen

It goes to the tune of “Where is Thumbkin”.

No matter where we are they sing the song. Sometimes in restaurants, we try to get them to let us (my husband and I) bless the food – but they insist on singing their song.

If we’re at the Waffle House or IHOP, we let them sing – but recently, we took them to a more refined fining establishment and I just couldn’t allow it.

It’s not that we have a problem with them singing – we love to hear them sing or blessing their food in public. But it’s the way they’ve altered the ending of the song that can be, well, embarrassing.

After they sing Amen, Amen – they yell EEEAAATTT!!! And then they attack their food as if it’s a competition and a race to the finish.

Usually, when we go to a restaurant and they start singing people around us stop and notice their lovely sing and they smile. And then as they near the end, I cringe because I know what’s about to happen. “Amen, Amen – EEEAAATTT!!!” And old ladies who were once smiling in approval and now shacking their heads in horrible disbelief.

Oh well, they’re boys. Texas boys at that!

This week, we are working on being thankful for the blessings the Lord has given us. I’m also working on a new mealtime blessing song….I found one to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle – we’ll see if a new song helps their mealtime manners. Pray for us!

Increasing in Him,
