Evan Almighty, Should Christian Families See It?

When I saw the first commercial for Evan Almighty, I vowed that they would never get my family’s money. I made the decision on the spot. I didn’t take any time to evaluate the content of the movie. My perception is that they were making fun of the Bible and making a mockery of my beliefs. No sir, they will not get my money.

Well, yesterday, I was driving home in traffic listening to my favorite Christian talk radio station and I heard a commercial for Evan Almighty. Before the commercial was over, I was on the phone to the radio station. You see, this station doesn’t accept every advertiser. They screen they’re advertisements. As the phone rang, I tried to figure out why would they allow such a movie to advertise on their station!

When the phone screener answered, I was sort of flustered and I said “Is your station endorsing that Nate Almight movie?”

She said, “Do you mean Evan Almighty? We aren’t necessarily endorsing it, you just heard a paid commercial.”

So I said, “Well, I was under the impression that you all screened your advertisements.”

She said, “We do.”

And I said, “Then why are you running an ad for a movie that makes fun of the Bible? Is it going to be like Bruce Almighty?”

She said, “Well, from everything the creators have shown our company, this movie is very different from Bruce Almighty. Two of the characters from the original movie are in this movie – but that’s about it. This is a family movie – safe for the entire family. And our company made the decision to allow the advertisements because they feel comfortable with the content of the movie.”

I said, “Oh, ok. Thanks for your time.”

Of course, I didn’t take her word for it – I did some additional investigation today and from everything I’ve seen, Evan Almighty is safe for the family (besides a little bathroom humor) and is supposedly very funny.

Here’s a link to another discussion about the movie.

Will you take your family to see Evan Almighty? Please the comments button below and tell us your thoughts.

I was able to see Evan in a pre-screening and took kids from my youth group this morning. I enjoyed it both times and the youth liked it as well. I was pleased with the family friendliness.

Thanks, Joel. I’ve only heard good things about the movie. We didn’t get to see it this weekend, but I’m sure we’ll go next weekend.
